Call for Artists: Central Mass Pastel Society’s Marks of Distinction National Juried Show

All artists working in soft pastel are invited to enter their best work to Central Mass Pastel Society’s Marks of Distinction National Juried Show, now open for submissions until June 20 on ShowSubmit. The show will take place September 1-28, 2022 at Fivesparks, Harvard, MA.

Awards totaling over $5000 will be judged in person by pastel expert and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, painting curator Katie Hanson, and presented at a public reception on September 10, 4-6pm.

Selection jurors are Liz Balkwill and Natasha Isenhour. The gallery will be staffed for sales throughout the show; the show and sale will also be online.

“Don Key” Paint-Along with Rita Kirkman

Come paint this colorful donkey with us on Saturday, May 21, at 1pm CT.

Register early to have time to prep your drawing. Rita will send you the Zoom invitation, the reference photo, some surface prep info, some tips that include alternative underpainting methods in case you don’t have what she uses, and even a line drawing that you can use to transfer to your board or paper in case you don’t have time to freehand your drawing. No drawing skills required!

Rita will be using pastel with an acrylic-based underpainting, but you can use the medium of your choice. Plenty of instruction will focus on values and temperature which are universal to all color mediums. The paint-along will last about 2 hours.

Diana will help you develop confidence and skills to take on any new subject matter and bring your work to a new level.

“A Walk in the Park” Paint-Along with Rita Kirkman

Take a virtual walk in the park and paint some springtime park trails with us! (we might even add some flowers!)

Rita will send you the Zoom invitation, some reference photos (or you can use your own) and materials suggestions.

Rita will be using pastel with an acrylic-based underpainting or a variety of pastel papers, but you can use the medium of your choice.

Rita has had some attendees enjoy use oil, acrylic, pastel pencil, and even watercolor with her paint-alongs. Plenty of instruction will focus on values and temperature which are universal to all color mediums. The paint-along will start at 1pm Central Time and will last about 2 hours.

All registrants will receive a link to the video a few days later, so if you have to miss part, no worries!

Jeri Greenberg named Juror of Selection for Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod’s annual National exhibit FPO (For Pastels Only).

I will be teaching a “Behind The Looking Glass” for the PSA in NYC on May 9th, The Many Colors of White workshop for the Piedmont Pastel Society August 29th, a workshop for the Pastel Society of South Carolina September 12, and a 3 day workshop at the Jersey Shore in October.

Give someone you love or better yet Yourself the perfect Holiday Gift of freedom and creativity! Join me in a workshop in Glorious Naples Florida and the North Port Art Center in Florida for a workshop immersion in Abstract Pastel Painting!

Here’s what you will learn:
– Principles of design
– Mounting paper and tinting
– How to set up your surface
– Choosing a palette for maximum impact
– Expressive mark making
– Exercises to warm you up and leapfrog you ahead
– How and where to find inspiration
– Color Combinations that WORK!
– How to get that ‘Glow’
– Resources for ideas
– New and unique techniques and materials
– Framing techniques for your new masterpieces

Spaces are limited so each student receives plenty of attention. The workshop is geared from beginner to advanced. A working knowledge of color and design basics are helpful. A range of pastels from hard pastels to soft are important. A supply list is provided after registration. [Acrylic painters are welcome] Handouts and additional materials will be emailed.

I recently moved to Leland, NC from NJ/NY area and am pleased to announce that I will be teaching a weekly pastel class for the Cameron Art Museum starting on September 10, 2019, as well as 2-day workshops in September and November. I’m thrilled to be the first instructor in a very long time to offer a pastel only class to the Wilmington museum area.

I am a signature member of PSA and a IAPS Master Circle recipient, as well as other groups and I am excited to meet pastel artists in my new surroundings.

May 14 – Zoom demo with Janet Burgess

The vivacious and indomitable Janet Burgess will present the next episode in our Empowerment Series.  Ms Burgess has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Carolina University. She graduated Cum Laude with a double major in Art and Spanish. She also earned a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York City with a major in painting and drawing. Her life has been – and is – focused on creativity. An award-winning artist, she has demonstrated her ability to utilize the creativity within herself. Ms Burgess will speak from the point of view that one’s life is best fulfilled if everything we do is characterized by originality of thought and execution.
