Program Schedule for 2021

Meetings for the society are held on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10am – 12pm (unless otherwise scheduled).

During 2021 all meetings will be virtual and will highlight a demonstration by a prominent pastelist. Please see the schedule of programs planned for each month in 2021 listed below.

January – Terrilynn Dubreuill

By following a few inspirational ideas, Terrilynn will present some approaches that can help us be more intuitive in our landscape paintings.

February – Nancie King Mertz

March – Liz Haywood Sullivan, PSA-MP, IAPS/MC, IAPS/EP

Landscape demos on painting sunlight and shadow and the concept of underpainting using three values of blue for the shadows and three values of yellow for sunlight.

April – Maryann Mullett

Painting animals and fur

May – Fred Fielding

Fred will be demonstrating his process for developing a pastel painting over a watercolor underpainting on 11×14 lux archival paper, discussing the underpainting techniques and his color choices.

June 9-11 – Stephie Clark

The perfect 3 day workshop to discover the beauty of soft pastels with the focus on bright, loose florals. Each day will begin with a downloaded 2 hour demo, followed by participants working on their own and end each day via ZOOM with a live critique (4- 6pm). $130. Registration opens at noon on May 1. July 10 – Jen Evenhus

“A 10-Minute Masterpiece”
Watch Jen create a pastel painting in just 10 minutes!
She will explain how to mentally prepare, what materials to have on hand, and the use of unconventional tools. Jen will talk about quick color application techniques, share WHY you will benefit from painting fast and demo two or three different 10-minute paintings – ex: a still life, a floral, and a palm tree.

August – Nancy Nowak

“Shapes Not Things – Simplifying What You See”
Nancy Nowak will demo one of the most important aspects of painting, simplifying by painting shapes not objects. With this one major fundamental concept, you will be able to recognize patterns and be able to paint anything! Her demo will include adding people into the landscape to tell a more impactful story. Learn some easy tips and techniques to add figures into your paintings!

September – Patricia Savage

“Light Falling on Form”
Light sparks our mind and our heart. It creates the illusion of dimension. It colors our world. It makes our paintings glow or creates subtle, shifting gradations of light. This lecture will cover:

  • the color of light bulbs and how that color affects the subject matter,
  • how to light a studio for drawing and painting still life’s, portraits, and from photographs,
  • all the different ways to light a subject,
  • how light effects surfaces and
  • atmospheric effects.

October – Lyn Asselta

November – Gretha Lindwood

December – Words of Wisdom from Pastel Greats: The Interviews, The Advice with  Luana Luconi Winner

Luana Luconi Winner, a PSNC Past President, will be presenting a compilation of short Zoom video interviews with some of our global leaders in pastel. A few words of wisdom, a trick or two, some words of encouragement for all as they lead us into a bright and fulfilling New Year 2022.
The interviews will include: Michael Freeman – New Zealand, Tony Allain – Scotland, Kathy Hildebrandt – Canada, Alan Flattmann – Founder of Degas Society, Christine Ivers, VP-IAPS, Liz Haywood-Sullivan, IAPS-President Emeritus, maybe more! Come Join Us!!!

May 14 – Zoom demo with Janet Burgess

The vivacious and indomitable Janet Burgess will present the next episode in our Empowerment Series.  Ms Burgess has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Carolina University. She graduated Cum Laude with a double major in Art and Spanish. She also earned a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York City with a major in painting and drawing. Her life has been – and is – focused on creativity. An award-winning artist, she has demonstrated her ability to utilize the creativity within herself. Ms Burgess will speak from the point of view that one’s life is best fulfilled if everything we do is characterized by originality of thought and execution.
