“Oils and Pastels by Chapel Hill artist, Elaine Jerome”
Elaine Jerome has been painting most of her adult life. The subject matter reflects her extensive travel throughout the United State and Europe. She is especially drawn to seascapes having spent her childhood summers by the Connecticut shore and later on Fire Island, NY and on the islands of Kea and Lesvos in Greece.
In addition to being an artist, Elaine is a registered nurse and holds degrees in sociology, psychology, and community health. In World War II she served in the army nurse cadet corps. Elaine is the founder of the teen support coalition and the youth community project in Chapel Hill/Carrboro.

Years ago when Flora Giffuni, Founder of the Pastel Society of America and President advised me on how to begin the Pastel Society of North Carolina her advice was to begin small and build from there. It was great advice and how we have grown.
“Southern Comforts” was my accepted entry into that PSA exhibition where I met Flora. This pastel painting 18″ x 24″ was painted on Canson Mi Tienes. I went to the farmer’s market in Carrboro, NC and found an opportunity to take a photo reference.

Sycamore Tree won the Claude Parsons Memorial Award in the American Artists Professional League’s 92nd Grand National Exhibition in November 2020. Normally held at the Salmagundi Club in NYC, this year’s exhibition was online. AAPL shortly after offered me an Elected Associate Member status which I accepted.

I am delighted to have been mentioned on radio NPR’s The State of Things, hosted by Frank Stasio, Tuesday, August 4th. James Keul, the curator of Golden Belt’s Reawakening Exhibit and fellow artist of Golden Belt Artists Group, spoke about how artists were motivated to paint during the pandemic. He talked about my painting on paint-in zoom calls, painting models virtually, and needing to think outside the box. Also how I tried subjects conceptually, based on current events over these past months.
