Growing up in Catskill, NY, I was constantly drawing. This led to being the art editor of my high school yearbook, majoring in Fine Arts at SUNY Plattsburgh, and obtaining a BS in Art Education from Florida International University of Miami in December 1979. My dream of being an art instructor then artist, however, was put on a 35 year hold! I was hired by IBM in September 1979 in Boca Raton, FL and transferred to Raleigh, NC in 1999. I retired from IBM as a Vice President in September 2014 and worked at Lenovo through January 2015. Through the years during my IBM career I continued to paint as time allowed. Now retired, I am pursuing my life long dream of being an artist. My paintings include primarily landscapes, city scenes, and local Raleigh landmarks. I taught art (K – 5th grade and adult classes) part-time at Champion Learning Academy in Morrisville, N.C from October 2017 through June 2019. I have taken workshops from nationally recognized artists such as Nicole Kennedy, Dan Beck, Dawn Whitelaw, Derek Penix, and six with Albert Handell (my mentor, teacher, and friend). I paint primarily in oils. At the urging of Albert Handell, I started painting in pastels in 2020. I am creative member of Artspace (beginning July 2020) and 311 Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC. and a contributing artist of the Mattie King Davis Gallery in Beaufort, N.C and Bel Air Art Gallery in Rocky Mount, NC. In this short period I have been juried in over 30 local and national exhibitions winning numerous awards. Of note, I have been juried in to the 2018 American Impressionists Society’s national exhibition, the 105th Allied Artists of America exhibition in 2019, the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society’s 2018 Spring online International Exhibition, and the NOAPS 2019 Fall online International Exhibition.
Statement: My art has largely been of landscapes, cityscapes, and, at times, the people captured in these scenes. My approach in painting is to represent each subject in my unique colorful narrative style. I am not trying to just impart information but also construct and communicate a story complete with characters, elements, and settings. In turn, I hope to say something to the viewer, to trigger an emotion, or to spark a memory that resonates on a very unique personal level.
