Diana Coidan is not only an award winning pastel artist, but is also a fabulous instructor who can teach to students of any level. Diana’s “specialty” as an artist are clouds, water, boats and animal scenes.
Diana will begin with demonstrations of the technique and guide students on their individual paintings from start to finish. If you do have an old acrylic painting lying around that needs a little more spark and attention, please bring that with you. Come discover who you are as an artist and let Diana help guide you to your pathway of expression pastels. One of the best ways to find your style is to explore new materials and techniques, and if you have never tried pastels, you may find this an exciting stop on your painting journey that advances your entire artistic process. This workshop will be fun for participants at all levels except for very Beginner painters.
Diana will supply 9×12 Uart Pastel Paper. Please bring larger than 9×12 foam board to put under the paper and an 8×10 canvas or larger.

The Florence Thomas Art School
West Jefferson, NC
This 2-day plein air / studio workshop is for the intermediate pastel artist who would like to create studio work that has the light and feel of a plein air piece. The mornings will be spent in the field doing value sketches and quick color studies. In the afternoon we will return to the studio to create a larger studio painting. By relying on the sketches done in the field and not a photograph, the studio paintings will be more simplified and light filled.

In this workshop, learn to create the illusion of crashing waves in pastel. Go beyond the flat blues of photographs and enliven your seascapes with the colors in your memory. We’ll start with simple, abstracted underpaintings to build a strong foundation. Learn to crop photos for effective compositions, look at water’s reflective qualities and explore how light, motion and what lies beneath all affect what we see, and what we paint. We’ll explore special techniques that make water shimmer, flow and crash.

Making a connection between your painting and a viewer requires a clear idea of what you actually want your painting to say. Focusing on Intent can help you say it eloquently.
FREE Demo (40 seats available}
10:00 am to 12:30 pm
My demo will show you how intent shapes almost every decision I make with my painting process. My focusing on the intent of my painting, what I want to say, I become clear about everything from format and composition to color palette. I’ll bring along an underpainting and will discuss how I make choices during the painting process.
Mini-Workshop (12 spaces available)
$45 reserved/paid in advance
1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
In the afternoon mini-workshop, each student will be required to bring along either a failed painting or a painting that is giving him or her trouble. By using the failed painting as reference material, I’ll guide you through the process of evaluating the work and re-focusing on what’s important. Our goal will be to make a new painting that is more focused and expressive.
