May 14 PSNC Meeting: Traveling with Pastels
Our May 14 program will be about traveling with pastels and will feature Anne Kiefaber and Laura Pollak.
Anne will be showing her homemade sketchbook, as well as the tools she brought which were very portable from which she has produced some pastels and a couple of oils. She will explain her process and how she goes from a quick sketch to a painting. Ann will have a couple paintings in process, which she will bring.
Laura will be presenting some info on how she travels with Pastels… from plein air in her backyard to Japan, French Polynesia, and Italy. What to pack to minimize weight and space and to how to get through security. She’ll share photos of her setup on locale as well as photos of where she has traveled. Included will be small paintings done on location as well as the larger studio versions. She’ll also bring the backpack with the actual set ups.
Luana, our President, will have some giveaways she picked up for our members at the Portrait Society conference from one of the manufacturers!
Hope to see you at the meeting at 10 AM at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens room 106, 100 Old Mason Farm Road, Chapel Hill!
Painting Expressive Landscapes – November 21
Presenter: Wendy Musser
Date: Saturday, November 21, 2015
Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Place: NC Botanical Garden, 100 Old Mason Farm Road, Chapel Hill
Painting out of doors can be either exhilarating or daunting. While painting in plein air Wendy tries to create a painting that is tranquil by incorporating the exhilarating things that attracted her to the scene and editing the daunting down to the essential elements. Her goal is to paint an image where the viewer can feel that the fast pace of our technologically filled lives can be left behind; a subject that will evoke a feeling of place where the viewer is not pulled in a million directions. When painting in the studio from photographs Wendy tries to remember the mood the location evoked, what the day was like and the sounds she heard and uses these memories to create a painting that will be reminiscent of her plein air work.

Luminosity in Snow Scenes by Anne Kiefaber
To Anne, painting snow is all about light, reflections and the feeling she remembers after viewing the scene. In her demonstration she shared different processes she employs to create stunning snow scenes in pastels. These techniques can be applied to other subject matter as well.
Anne worked from an oil study and incorporated her experience in plein air painting into her lesson. After doing an underpainting in gouache she demonstrated how this technique can enhance the properties of pastel and enable the artist to achieve a beautiful luminosity which is vital when painting a snow landscape.
