3-Day Workshop with Stephie Clark: Discover the beauty of soft pastels
Learn more and sign up here – registration begins on May 1 @ noon.
We have designed the perfect 3 day workshop to discover the beauty of soft pastels and let Stephie take you on an exploration of soft pastel art with the focus on bright, loose florals.
Suited for beginners and intermediate students.
Each day of the workshop, Stephie demonstrates exactly how she makes a painting from scratch using her self taught techniques for her backgrounds and applying pastels with freedom and thoughtfulness.
We will paint from life as well as photos and discuss the differences. Stephie not only wants you to come away with some successful works, but also the confidence, knowledge and skills to keep practicing at home.
Stephie wants each workshop participant to grow in experience and apply skills that are relevant for your own artistic voice.
Day One: Introduction to the process and order of painting, my chosen materials for creating expressive art. The benefits of using colour and shape to create form and depth in our subjects, demonstration of backgrounds and the techniques used. Full instruction and guidance on setting backgrounds ready to meet our subjects.
Day Two: Learn about tones, values and hues with a colour study. Working from still life set up and artists reference photos. Implementing skills Stephie uses in each of art works, learn to hold different shapes and sizes pastels and blend and shade by using shapes upon one another. Practice by creating a piece of your choice.
Day Three: Focus on creating leaves and petals upon our backgrounds and using the stroke skills with full tutorial and constructive critique each student will complete a full piece.

Years ago when Flora Giffuni, Founder of the Pastel Society of America and President advised me on how to begin the Pastel Society of North Carolina her advice was to begin small and build from there. It was great advice and how we have grown.
“Southern Comforts” was my accepted entry into that PSA exhibition where I met Flora. This pastel painting 18″ x 24″ was painted on Canson Mi Tienes. I went to the farmer’s market in Carrboro, NC and found an opportunity to take a photo reference.
