Get Dusty – How to Pastel with No Fear
Workshop Fee: $139
Skill Level: All
Time: Thursday, November 14, 2019 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Retail Store

New to art, new to soft pastel, experienced but need a refresher, transitioning from another medium? This is the class for you. Find the sheer joy in making marks again as you did when you were a child.

Quality exercises to calm fears of trying something new will be interspersed with substantive, fundamental pastel painting information – covering how to use hard and soft pastels, papers and surfaces, how to make changes, diversity of applications methods both wet and dry. Leave with several reference exercises, and time-permitting, one small, close-to-finished piece.

Some pastels, materials, and references will be provided, but feel free to bring any pastel or drawing materials you may already have and wish to bring along. Also, bring a clean, worn out brush, some moist hand wipes, a kneadable eraser, and an open mind.

Vibrant Pastel Portraits – The Secret is in the Joyful Application
Workshop Fee: $139
Skill Level: All
Time: Thursday, November 14, 2019 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Is a pastel a drawing or a painting? Depending on the approach and application it can be either. Vibrant portraits as drawings are a simplified approach and often become the underpainting to highly detailed finished products. Know when to stop.

We will cover: using dynamic colors, layering those colors to create depth of hues, relying on basic shapes to simplify and begin without hesitation, the basics of human proportion, methods of transferring images from life or references, sculpting with shadow and light, when to use hard and soft edges, techniques to “turn form” to appear rounder with more depth.

Now we add the Joy. Draw. Play. Make marks. Let the soft pastels carry you into a new form of expression about our landscapes, our still lifes, and its people. Some pastels, materials, reference photo, and a method of transfer will be provided. Feel free to bring any pastels or drawing materials you may already have and wish to bring, some moist hand wipes, a clean, worn out brush, and if you’d like to share – one good joke.
