Artist’s Statement

From a child through my adult years, I have always sketched or painted when I was drawn to a subject or scene. In the late 1980?s, I took a class in pastels and immediately fell in love with the technique and the immediacy of this wonderful medium. I work mainly in soft pastels, but in the past few years I have turned to oil pastels to experiment with a new medium. No matter which medium I use, however, I paint in an impressionistic style, with emphasis on strong color and contrasting light patterns.

The light and color of a scene inspires me: the special air surrounding a tree in late afternoon, the stillness of the desert, the energy of a stormy sky. This is what I want to share with whoever views my paintings, communicating to them those singular moments and to experience the beauty that I see.
